Sanitation sludge disposal – a challenge to sanitation
In many densely populated urban areas existing on-site sanitation facilities are neglected, poorly maintained and without access to disposal services. The results are sanitation systems that fail to safely dispose of sanitation sludge because of inadequate or inefficient infrastructure, causing dangerous overflow or improper disposal into fresh water resources. This endangers public health and pollutes the environment.
The municipal based sludge treatment plant is an affordable solution for the regular maintenance of all on-site treatment systems and can be built by local craftsmen and engineers using locally available resources. It enables cities to set up a regulatory framework and sanitation management plan at their own pace.
